You (usually) get what you pay for

Solanova Omega Gel Omega 3 fatty acid

If you purchase a lower end car at a deep discount, you can bet that the car probably doesn’t have the greatest track record in the world.  Furthermore, you wouldn’t expect this car to perform like a Porsche or a BMW, right?  So why would you want to deep discount your health?

Not all vitamins or supplements are created equal.  Not even close.  The ubiquitous “cheap vitamins” that you see for sale in drug stores or online claim to be powerful and effective.  But if you read the fine print, oftentimes you see additives and other ingredients that aren’t beneficial.  Or you discover that in order to achieve the promised efficacy of the supplement, you are required to take six or eight of them a day, instead of a couple.  This alone can make the “discount” supplements much more expensive than originally thought.  Yet you’re still receiving (and ingesting) lower quality product.

The old saying “you get what you pay for” is generally true.  High quality, natural supplements that are optimally absorbed into the body do cost more, because they work better than their cheaper counterparts.  Why would you bother to take supplements or vitamins at all, if you weren’t sure your body was using them to full effect?  If money is an issue, and these days it is for most of us, select two or three supplements or vitamins that you know you can’t live without and invest in a high quality, proven version of them.  In the end you’ll save money, time, and effort and can rest assured that you are making the best choices for your overall health.

For Whom the Cake Tolls

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

iStock_000000081470XSmall-1_cake

Sometimes I equate a really messy car-I’m talking gym shoes, old magazines, big gulp containers, and wrappers littering the backseat-with bad eating habits.  It seems as though, when I get off on the wrong track, i.e. it’s a Monday and I’m already in  the break room at work scarfing down cake from Friday’s birthday party, that I’ve sabotaged myself, and the only way to deal with it is simply to order a large pizza.

But take my word for it: this is a slippery (and fatty) slope.

We’ve all been tempted to just give up, even in the throes of healthy eating and systematic exercise.  Just like the old, trashed car that we drove around in college, it just seems easier to throw another steak on the bbq, just like we threw another big gulp container in the backseat, rather than committing to cleaning the car out.  The thing we have to remember is that the more trash we fill the car with-or that we stuff down our gullet-the longer and harder it will be to clean it (and get rid of the excess weight.)

It’s also important to understand what may be causing this self-defeating behavior.  Stress and anxiety can be catalysts to poor eating habits.  Getting enough sleep, taking a yoga class or going for a long walk can help.  And taking a natural supplement such as Solanova’s Relora®, which can alleviate stress, tension, irritability, and may regulate stress-related eating behaviors and subsequent weight gain, can also aid in your fight for control of your cravings.

Ban the it doesn’t matter now anyway self-sabotage.  Because in truth, it really Does matter.  So you had a piece of cake.  Hey, to eat junk food is human, to forgive yourself and not eat a sheet cake, is divine.  One 300-calorie indiscretion can lead to a 2000-calorie burrito-margarita-ice cream sundae glutton-fest.  Don’t give in to it.

There’s always a second chance for a healthy tomorrow. So get on it.  Oh.  And save me a piece of cake, will ya?

To sleep perchance to dream

Solanova Dual Release MelatoninNot being able to get to sleep or to stay asleep is one of the most frustrating things in the world.  Without proper sleep, it’s hard to do your job, stay healthy and enjoy life in general.  But now there is some exciting research that has concluded that taking a Melatonin supplement can make a huge difference and can assuage insomnia.  All without side effects or addictive properties.

In a randomized, placebo-controlled, multi-center study involving 170 primary insomnia outpatients (aged 55 years or older), treatment with prolonged-release melatonin (2 mg/d) for a period of 3 weeks was found to improve quality of sleep and morning alertness, without producing any rebound insomnia or withdrawal effects after discontinuation of treatment. Improvements in quality of sleep and morning alertness were strongly correlated, suggesting “a beneficial treatment effect on the restorative value of sleep.” When the effects of prolonged-release melatonin were assessed in a subgroup of subjects with greater symptom severity, similar beneficial effects were found. Adverse events were not common, with most side-effects considered minor. The authors conclude, “PR-melatonin is the first drug shown to significantly improve quality of sleep and morning alertness in primary insomnia patients aged 55 years and older.” Vitasearch Comment: Since drugs can lead to dependence, it may be appropriate to try PR-melatonin 2-3 mg/d 60 minutes before bedtime for the treatment of insomnia.

The resurrection of customer service

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

Have you ever waited in a line that seemed completely futile?  Perhaps at a bank, a department store or the ever-popular DMV?  You probably felt like you would expire in line before anyone condescended to help you.  We’ve all experienced this kind of sub-par treatment.  It’s almost as if these institutions pride themselves on their lack of customer service.  And then, if that weren’t enough, oftentimes they aren’t very helpful or responsive once you actually speak to someone.

Happy Solanova customer! But then, as if a beacon in dense fog, you discover a company that does care about their customers, i.e. you, and it is almost shocking.  You are so thankful you practically forget what you wanted in the first place!

We at Solanova feel that excellent customer service is something that you should expect and deserve and we do everything within our power to make sure you have the best experience possible.  Do you need specific health information?  No problem.  Would you like your vitamins or supplements sent to you regularly at a discount? We can do that.  We take great pride in offering our customers proven, natural and highly absorbable vitamins and supplements that we ship to you in a timely fashion.  We’ve also reconfigured our website for easier navigation and have added more health information and will continue to upgrade and expand our product line.

And as always, we contribute 20% of all Solanova profits to the non-profit organization AAMF; a foundation that provides disadvantaged children with adequate nutrition, medication and education. We are committed to helping children and families around the world enjoy a healthy, hopeful life.

Make friends with Omega-3's

vitamins_spoon_500x332

If you’ve been feeling blue and aren’t particularly keen to take a pill to feel better, there may be some natural alternatives that can work to help mitigate depression in both adults and children.

In a review of 3 studies investigating the effects of omega-3 fatty acids in the treatment of patients with depression – unipolar, bipolar, and childhood – supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids, specifically EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) was found to have beneficial effects. In one study which involved 20 patients with unipolar recurrent major depression, significant improvements were found after 3 weeks of daily supplementation with EPA (in addition to antidepressant drug therapy) as compared to a placebo. In another study, involving 12 bipolar depression outpatients with depressive symptoms, supplementation with 1.5 to 2.0 g/d EPA for up to 6 months was found to reduce Hamilton depression scores by at least 50% in 8 of the 10 subjects who completed at least 1 month of follow-up. In the third study, involving 28 children between the ages of 6 and 12 with “childhood major depression,” omega-3 fatty acids were found to have significant benefits, according to ANOVA. The authors conclude, “Omega-3 fatty acids were shown to be more effective than placebo for depression in both adults and children in small controlled studies and in an open study of bipolar depression.”

Summertime Blues

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

solanova supplements and exercise for energy and health

Maybe it’s because the weather is sweltering and there is no relief in sight.  Or maybe it’s because you just got downsized from your job or that your “stay-cation” consists of a blow up kiddie pool and a six-pack in the front yard.  Whatever the reason, summer blues can be particularly frustrating because this is the time of year everyone is supposed to feel happy, relaxed and free.  So what’s wrong?

This is not always an easy question to answer.

Sometimes mild depression or “the blues” can be mitigated by an enhanced diet.  Foods rich in omega-3’s, vitamin B12 and folic acid can boost your mood and also help with any weight-related mild depression or anxiety.  And be sure to keep up with an exercise regime, or if you’ve let one slide, reinvent yourself with some physical activity that is also social, i.e. salsa dancing, a yoga class, or even a biking/hiking club.  Oftentimes sharing activities with those who are likeminded can help you feel better and more connected.

There has been some compelling research lately that suggests that omega-3 fatty acid deficiency can contribute to depression in some individuals.  In one study done with cardiovascular disease patients, it was found that as levels of omega-3’s dropped off, depression seemed to rise.  Ensuring the body is replete with proper omega-3 levels can possibly help prevent some cancers and cardiovascular disease and is now thought to ease depression.

So keep active, eat properly to keep blood sugar at a healthy level, and make sure you take some time for yourself as well as for your friends and family.  Hopefully you’ll see those summer blues melt away, like strawberry ice cream on a hot day.

Cold Shoulder

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Very few things are more of a bummer than a summer cold.  While everyone else is playing in the pool, enjoying a warm, relaxing day at the beach, or boarding a plane for some exotic destination, you are sequestered at home, watching Dr. Phil reruns.

Yep.  Summer has given you the cold shoulder.

You retrace your steps.  In the wintertime, when the flu was spreading like wildfire, you were really methodical about getting enough rest, taking your antioxidants and vitamins to boost your energy level and ensure continued good health.  But then the clouds cleared, the sun shone brightly and you forgot all about your previous wellness regime.

Aside from staving off colds and other ailments, vitamins and antioxidants could help to lessen your risk of developing some kinds of cancers.  Having trouble with the summertime blues?  A recent study indicates that an increased daily dosage of Omega-3 fatty acids may help fight depression in adults and children.

What are you waiting for?  Click here to order up some healthy antioxidant supplements. Then go enjoy the rest of your summer!

Mind over Matter

brain memory enhancement solanova supplements

What’s the matter? Can’t think of the exact word you need to convey your mood or tone?  Forgot the name of the neighbor down the block?  It’s right on the tip of your…your…you know!  All of a sudden you’re noticing that the synapses aren’t firing quite as quickly as they used to.  But don’t worry. Just like the body, it’s a wonderful idea to exercise the brain, or as Hercule Poirot might quip, it’s important to work out the little gray cells.

It is an unfortunate fact of life that many of us tend to forget things as we age.  But we aren’t powerless.  One easy way to combat brain “freeze” is to eat head-healthy foods.  Fish that is rich in omega-3 fatty acids is an indispensable part of a healthy diet.  Fish has been linked to improved memory capacity and also lowered risk of dementia and stroke.  Don’t like our scaly friends?  Try a high quality omega-3 supplement instead.  Other brain strengtheners include blueberries, whole grains, avocado, nuts and even (a little) dark chocolate.

Aside from normal exercise that can enhance overall health of the body and mind, try some brainteasers to increase your memory and alertness.  Learning a foreign language, doing the crossword in your paper every day, working through the latest Sudoku book or playing chess can all raise your mental acuity.

And who wouldn’t want that, smarty pants?

+++++++++++++++++++++++

Some other ideas on how to tease, work, and take care of your brain can be read about here.  Also try investing in our high quality Omega-Gel ® omega 3 supplement.  Our Omega-Gel® can enhance brain, eye and immune system function as well as help to raise HDL “good” cholesterol levels.

Act your Age

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

What is that line from the classic Aerosmith song Dream on?  Every time that I look in the mirror.  All these lines in my face gettin’ clearer… Sound familiar?  Lately I’ve been spending a lot of time scrutinizing every line and wrinkle and cursing the inevitable; growing older.  These days I vastly prefer candlelit dinners to well-lit brunches and wish it didn’t cost a small fortune to buy creams and potions to plump up my fine lines.  If only there was another way.

At the same time, I’m not a fan of unnecessary pain.  And therefore I’m not willing to do anything invasive to make myself look five or even ten years younger.  So now what?  I pondered my predicament for a long time.  Why was I so upset?  It seemed completely ridiculous and wasteful to spend my time lamenting about something I had no control over.  Then I finally asked myself, what is really important in life?  The answer came swiftly: being healthy, feeling good about myself, helping others and trying to make the world a half-way pleasant place to live.  Oh yeah, and strawberry ice cream on a hot day.

And I discovered something else rather amazing.  It turns out that I actually like being the age I am.  I didn’t want to be twenty-one, wondering who I was and what I was going to do with my life.  I’ve learned a few things in all the years since, and I’d be loath to give that wisdom up.

Then I came up with a plan.  Instead of wasting valuable time and energy with all my misguided worries about aging, I could instead spend more time with friends and family, read the classics, make healthy food and supplement choices, and seek out fun stuff to do.  And then something magical would happen.  I would look great, feel much happier and maybe, just maybe, capture some of that elusive youthful charm and energy, naturally.

Wouldn’t that be something?

Take it to Heart

solanova heart health omega-3 supplements

The sweat is dripping down the front of you.  Your breathing is labored and you think your legs just might turn to Jell-O at any moment.  But you push yourself, not only because you’re going to look great for that school reunion (It’s been too many years to contemplate) but also because you really care about your heart.  You want it to work as well as it possibly can and for as long as it possibly can.  Because, as the song goes, you’ve got a lot of living to do!  And you won’t be shortchanged.  No way!

But where to start?  Creating a heart health baseline is always a good idea.  Get your cholesterol, blood pressure and other common medical tests done regularly.  This will let you know what you need to work on and can help forecast if you are at risk for heart disease.  Once you know what you need to do, you can start working to improve your health right away.

Of course we have to talk about our old friend, exercise.  Yes, it’s unavoidable.  But the results can be amazing!  There has been research conducted stating that people who participate in 30 minutes of cardio at least 3 or 4 times a week can decrease their risk for heart disease, some cancers, dementia and have the potential for living years longer than their couch potato peers.  Another added bonus to regular exercise is that it makes you feel and look great and can even curb depression.  Not too shabby for half an hour on the treadmill!

Think Omega-3’s.  Eating foods and taking supplements rich in Omega-3’s is great for your heart!  Fish, flax seed, cantaloupe, spinach, walnuts and broccoli are some excellent sources.  Supplements are also handy and easy to take if you don’t happen to have a bushel of broccoli in your briefcase.

Don’t wait.  Take care of your heart now so it can take good care of you down the road.

See you on the Stairmaster!
