The Kind of Treat you Don’t Eat

Are you feeling deprived?  Working hard, running around all day long, trying to exercise and take care of yourself (and everyone else) to the point of absolute exhaustion?  And when you finally have a moment’s peace, you decide that you deserve a treat-something chocolately and gooey no doubt-because you’ve worked so hard and sacrificed for so long.

Maybe that’s not such a good idea.

If you truly are trying to live a healthy and active life, rewarding yourself (and your family) with sweet, fatty, and sugary treats is good for no one.  Aside from the obvious glut of fat and sugar, you are setting a dangerous precedent: food equals reward.

Some people choose food as a reward because it’s cheap.  But I would argue that’s not entirely true.  Healthcare costs are rising, and what about the new wardrobe you’d have to buy after you gain ten pounds from consuming all of the treats you “deserve”?

There is a better way.

Reward yourself and loved ones with a new CD or DVD, a beautiful candle, tickets to a sports event or concert, a pound of gourmet coffee, or even with a massage or pedicure.  Especially if you have kids (or grandkids), this will establish that rewards don’t have to be sugar/fat/food related.

And hey. You could even buy yourself or a loved one some favorite nutritional supplements and give the ultimate reward: Good health!

Sometimes I wish I were Barbara Eden from I dream of Jeannie.  I’d be able to make my wishes come true in an instant with a mere nod of my ponytailed head.  Then I could effortlessly get rid of the eight stubborn pounds I’ve been struggling to lose since the millennium.

Firstly, we all know that “diets” don’t work.  Not in the long term anyway.  There is a simple equation that I for one have a hard time following: eat less + exercise more= fit into favorite jeans. I’m unfortunately, perhaps like many of you, stuck in dieting limbo.  When I go to the gym, I lecture myself about eating salads for lunch and eschewing bacon cheeseburgers, so as not to undo what I’ve accomplished on the Stairmaster.  When I’m lazing on the couch at home, however, I muse about the double workout I plan to do tomorrow as I’m polishing off the last of the pepperoni pizza.  To compensate, of course.

So how do we stop this cycle?  Or more specifically, how can I eat whatever I want and as much as I want without lifting a finger and still look like I belong in the annual SI swimsuit issue?  If I knew the answer, I’d be bathing in a pile of money on my own pacific island.

I have practiced perhaps some unorthodox methods for keeping my weight under control.  Aside from the eating less/exercise more initiative  that I often get bored with, I make a point (once I talk myself off the couch) of brushing my teeth right after dinner.  This prevents me from taking a second helping (or a third in some cases) and also helps me fight my sugar cravings after dinner.  Mint toothpaste and Butter Pecan don’t mix very well and that is the whole idea.

Another, albeit painful concept, is to post a less than flattering picture of yourself on the fridge, closet, bathroom mirror, or any other place you find yourself standing every day.  This is a sad yet effective reminder that you don’t need a double fudge sundae-put the spoon down and walk away.

Lastly I try to scare myself straight.  I go out of my way to read articles about what being too overweight can do to your health, i.e. cause high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes etc.  Then I try to find news stories that discuss how healthy foods, i.e. salads, kale, fish, fruits, whole grains and legumes can benefit your health and actually help you to live a longer life.

And if all these methods fail me?  I practice my tried and true mantra: everything in moderation.  Then I grab a spoon and head for the Butter Pecan.  But only for a small bowl-the carton’s almost empty anyway!
